Not being the most the inventive person might not actually hurt your chances of survival in the small business world. Personally I can relate to this article as well, I am not creative myself either. I liked the example of the pet rock, it seems to be the worst possible product idea, but was actually very viable. There are many aspects that going to being successful in business, while having a great product is helpful, it’s not always necessary. Having a sound business plan, the financial means, and the resources are all important factors but I think the biggest key to success is an individual’s personal desire. If you have the desire to go into business yourself, don’t get stressed over the type of business or products you wish to sell.
The odds are not always going to be with small business owners, but if you don’t take the chance you may never know what could have been.
What products or businesses can you recall that seem like a really poor concept that turned out to be successful?

A product that first comes into my mind that seemed dumb was the giga pet. I mean who would buy a toy that was an electronic pet that you played with and feed and told to sleep. It seems like if you want to have a pet you would just go out and buy one. I believe that this concept worked for a couple of reasons. First, some parents didn't allow dogs or cats in their house. I remember that my brother bought a giga pet when he was young because he wanted a cat but couldn't get one because I was allergic to them. Second, this idea of an electronic pet allowed my brother to still have that feeling of taking care for a pet without actually having one. Third, a giga pet could be a trail process for the parents to see if there son or daughter were ready to take care of a real pet.
ReplyDeleteI never thought this business idea would end up being successful but it did. This just goes to show when you think ever form of business idea has been done, it hasn’t. Technology just keeps on growing and so does our knowledge. There will always be opportunities for new businesses to enter into society. Nobody should ever give up on their dream; if you are motivated you can accomplish anything.

ReplyDeleteGoing along with Zachary, I am also not the most creative or inventive. Looking at things like the pet rock and giga pets gives me hope! Going along with the Giga Pet, another idea that I didn't think would go anywhere was the Firby. I always thought they were the creepiest toys and could not imagine who would want one--but after being introduced their popularity exploded.
ReplyDeleteThe part of the article that I really liked is when he talked about how the best ideas don't come when you're trying--they come when you're doing something that couldn't be any farther than business: when you're showering, driving etc. It also encourages me to write those ideas down and talk about it with others to see how I could improve it or scrap it altogether.
